A drunk woman racially-abused and spat on a doorman at a Derby city centre club as he wouldn’t let her and her group inside. Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court heard how 23-year-old Saddiya Mahmood called the man “a white b*****d” when he refused them entry to Fever nightspot.
The former support worker, of Normanton, was arrested and told police the staff at The Wardwick club were “always” refusing to let her brother in and that they had acted aggressively towards her and her friends. Now she has a criminal record for the first time in her life.
Theo Addae, her solicitor, said: “This is a young woman with no previous convictions until now, so you have to ask yourself what must have happened that evening? Something must have happened for her to act in this manner.
“She says her and her friends went out for some drinks and (when they got to Fever) the first bouncer said they could come in. But (she says) the second bouncer always makes an excuse why her brother cannot come in.
“Her brother was not drunk at all and he (the victim) started laughing about it, she felt provoked and he pushed her blood up and that provoked her into acting in this particular way. She says she rarely drinks but she accepts she spat at the bouncer in her frustration and she said those words which is something she deeply regrets.
“This is going to affect her future, she has worked since she left school. For the six years prior she has been working as a support worker at a residential school for people with learning difficulties.
“She has now moved to a residential home for young people with a history of trauma and neglect. Her record has been tarnished as a result of this moment of madness.”
Beth Leigh, prosecuting, said the incident took place outside Fever at around 1.45am on December 10, last year. She said the defendant and her group tried to get in but were told they would not be allowed to as one of them, her brother, was “too drunk”.
The prosecutor said: “The group of females all became aggressive with the door staff. One defendant has already been dealt with (by the courts) for punching the victim but this defendant called him ‘a white b*****d’ and ‘I will get some guys round here to beat you up’. She then spat at him. The police arrived and arrested her.”
Miss Leigh read out a victim impact statement made by the doorman. In it, he said: “I have never been racially assaulted before, in one way I would rather have been physically assaulted.”
Mahmood, of Harriet Street, pleaded guilty to common assault and using racially-aggravated words or behaviour. She has no previous convictions. Magistrate Philip Hickson, chair of the bench, fined her £747 and ordered her to pay £50 compensation to the victim and a £299 victim surcharge meaning the defendant’s actions that evening have cost her more than £1,000.
He said: “The public are absolutely fed up with late-night behaviour like this which is totally unacceptable, those words were obnoxious. I hope this is the end of the matter and we don’t see you before the courts again.”
