A man believed to be wanted in connection with four ‘horrific’ rapes in Manchester city centre was reportedly detained by two security staff until police arrived.
The perpetrator is believed to have targeted ‘intoxicated men and women’ before raping them and stealing their personal belongings. An investigation was launched by Greater Manchester Police following spate of four separate incidents reported earlier this year in February.
A man was arrested on Sunday morning and remains in custody to be questioned by detectives. While all four victims are currently being supported by specialist officers.
The man was held by two door staff working for Manchester-based C&D Security, reports the Manchester Evening News. Boss of the company, Chris Smith said: “We get access to different pictures if someone is wanted by the police or of interest to them. One of my door staff saw him while on duty at a city centre venue and realised he was wanted. He and another member of staff have grabbed this guy and detained him for the police.
“I don’t know if the man tried to get into the venue, but when he has walked past the front of it the door staff have recognised him. We have use a system which is a direct link to the police and Manchester City council CCTV. We do a lot of work for GMP. I set up the company three years ago and we have 85% of Canal Street.”
Chris added: “I would like to thank all our door staff, especially the two that were on duty that night, for detaining someone wanted for serious alleged offences.”
Speaking at the weekend, Detective Superintendent Richard Hunt, Force lead for Rape and Other Sexual Offences said: “Our specialist officers have been and are continuing to support those involved in these incidents, and we are doing all we can to provide the appropriate care that they need at this time.
“These are truly horrific crimes, no one should feel unsafe when walking the streets of Greater Manchester. We remain committed to achieving justice for all victims of rape and we do not tolerate any form of sexual violence in our communities.
“We urge anyone who has experienced sexual violence or abuse, to please come forward and report it to us. Every report will be thoroughly investigated, and we will ensure that you and your loved ones are fully supported every step of the way as we seek justice.”
