Tributes flood in after death of “true legend” Doncaster doorman

Emotional tributes have poured in following the shock death of a popular and well-known Doncaster doorman, dubbed “a true legend” with “a big heart.”

Tributes have been paid to Ian Smithurst, who has died at the age of 57.

He was a familiar face to revellers on the doors of the city’s pubs and clubs over many years and was affectionately known as Uncle Fester after the character from TV show The Addams Family.

He also worked at Doncaster Racecourse.

One tribute said: “A true legend within the security industry, Ian was a dedicated advocate and a deeply respected figure.

“Those who knew him will remember not only his professionalism, but also his character, warmth, and unwavering commitment to others.

“Our heartfelt thoughts are with Debbie and all of his family at this very difficult time.

“He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Rest in peace, Festa.”

Another friend shared: “Always had a smile on ya face when I saw you on the doors in town or the Racecourse. RIP pal and a gentleman.”

Another wrote: “RIP my old mate – was a pleasure knowing you and working with you. Always laughing and joking with a big heart who would help anyone.”

“Rest in peace. I swear this industry is never going to be the same without you Fester,” shared another.

And another friend shared: “RIP, a true gentleman and good friend.

“Taken far too soon. I know you will be on the gate up there making sure that people are on the list to get in . Sleep tight brother.”
