Doormen have told how they desperately tried to save the life of a man who was found stabbed in the street.
Police were called to Railway Road, Ormskirk, at 12.05am today, July 29, to reports of an ongoing disturbance and found a 19-year-old man with stab injuries. Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he died later in hospital.
Another man, also 19, was also found with stab wounds. He was taken to hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life-threatening.
Two men, a 19-year-old from Liverpool, and a 19-year-old from Maghull, have been arrested on suspicion of affray. They remain in police custody for questioning.
Anthony White, operations manager of CSS Security, told LancsLive how his staff “did everything they could” to try and help. He said: “Our guys were first on the scene and tried to help the victim.
“They gave him first aid, put pressure on the wound and gave him CPR. They did everything they could. One of our doormen is traumatised. He doesn’t feel able to work after what happened last night.”
CCS Security provide doormen for many late-night venues in both Ormskirk and Liverpool. Anthony continued: “We don’t often have to deal with knives. We describe it as a retirement job for our doormen because it’s quiet and safe.
“Everyone’s in shock. The family of the victim came to visit the crime scene earlier and they just broke down in tears.”
The death of the teenager in the town centre has left residents shocked.
Many owners and employees of the market stalls and local shops first heard there had been an incident when they arrived for work this morning, finding the police cordon across the top of Moor Street, Railway Road and part of Moorgate.
Some traders had to move their stalls, while shops inside the cordon were not allowed to open until noon. Many worried locals were heard asking police officers standing guard at the cordons for more information.
One person, who did not wish to be named, said: “I’m so surprised. It’s such a lovely area.” Another added: “I’ve been working here for a month. Everyone I’ve spoken to has been nice.”
One woman who works at a pub nearby said she arrived to find police tape blocking the entrance at 7am this morning. She was told there had been a fight close by.
News of a stabbing death has raised concerns about the prominence of knife crime across the country. One woman visiting from Skelmersdale said: “I lived in Ormskirk for years. It’s not that type of area.”
Many expressed their sympathies with the victims and their family. One local said: “It’s so sad. You just don’t expect these things to happen.” Another added: “Some people’s lives have been irrevocably changed after last night.”
Lancashire Police has appealed for witness or anyone with information to come forward. They can contact police on 101, quoting log 0006 of July 29, 2023.
