Newcastle man left Duke of Northumberland doorman with a permanent scar in one-punch attack

Gary Sayers, 48, left a doorman with permanent facial scars after punching him in the Duke of Northumberland pub

A Newcastle man left a bouncer with a permanent facial scar after punching him when he asked his banned friend to leave the pub.

Gary Sayers unleashed a one-punch attack on the door supervisor at the Duke of Northumberland pub in the city centre earlier this year.

A court heard that Sayers had been drinking in the pub on January 20 with a friend who was barred from the establishment.

But shortly after the doorman asked the man to leave, Sayers approached him and punched him once in the face.

On Wednesday, Sayers, of Dipton Avenue, Benwell, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court facing a charge of assault by beating. The 48-year-old pleaded guilty to the offence at the morning hearing.

Holly Clegg, prosecuting, said: “[Sayers] was in the Duke of Northumberland when the injured party, a door supervisor, spoke to a friend of the defendant who was barred and asked him to leave.

[The victim] was standing at the bar when the defendant came over and punched him in the face, leaving him with a permanent facial scar.”

Peter Doherty, defending, told the court that Sayers was unable to carry out any unpaid work due to mental and physical health disabilities.

He said: “The defendant is incapable of doing any physical work due to a physical disability. He also has depression.”

District Judge Kate Meek asked for a probation report to be completed and adjourned sentencing. She also asked Sayers to provide medical proof he was unable to work.

The sentencing was adjourned until Tuesday, September 2. Sayers was given conditional bail until his next appearance.
