Man took on bouncers and police but it didn’t end well

Anthony Harbridge hit and spat at police officers and staff after a night out

A Wirral man was jailed after assaulting and spitting at police officers and staff following an evening out in Cambridge. In the early hours of November 21, 2023, police responded to a disturbance in the city centre where Anthony Harbridge was caught on CCTV menacing nightclub security personnel.

The 31 year old evaded the police when they approached him, subsequently attacking and spitting at the officers, according to Cambridgeshire Police.

While detained, Harbridge reportedly used his boxer shorts, which he tied round his neck, in an apparent attempt to feign unconsciousness until a detention officer intervened. He then assaulted the officer, grabbing his throat and shoving him against a cell wall.

On Wednesday, June 4, at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court, Harbridge, from Woodville Road, Birkenhead, received a 40-week jail sentence. He had admitted to criminal damage, three counts of assaulting a police officer, and affray.

Additionally, he is ordered to compensate the injured detention officer with £750, who suffered a concussion and required hospital care, reports Cambridgeshire Live.

PC Sarah Pride, the investigating officer, said: “As police officers and detention officers, we come to work knowing the dangers of the role but being abused for doing our job is unacceptable.”
