Bouncer given suspended sentence after causing grievous bodily harm

Matthew Waters, aged 33, from Aberdare, was sentenced on Friday January 30 at Merthyr Tydfil Crown Court to 12 months in prison, suspended for 24 months. This sentence follows a guilty plea for one count of inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.

This followed officers attending the Koolers nightclub in Merthyr Tydfil on May 26, 2025, after receiving a report from a member of the public that a bouncer had assaulted the victim so badly that it caused him to fall over the barriers.

After obtaining CCTV, Waters can be seen lifting the victim so high that his head was blocking the doorway entrance. Watters then threw the victim over the railing, outside the entrance of the nightclub and his head is seen to hit the floor directly.

The victim was left with several injuries including a fractured skull and a bleed on the brain.

Detective Constable Koray Demirkiran said “This was a particularly violent attack on the victim, leaving him with significant and lasting injuries. The impact of this incident, not only the physical harm but the psychological trauma he continues to carry will likely affect him for the rest of his life. I would like to comment the victim for their courage and resilience throughout this investigation.”

“I also want to thank the witnesses who came forward. Their accounts were vital to this investigation, and we recognise that this incident has affected them as well. When people visit bars and nightclubs, they should be able to trust door staff who work there to keep them safe. “
