A violent thug has been jailed after launching an attack on a bouncer – and hurling racial abuse. Kailem Whitehouse lost his temper outside Wetherspoons in Hanley on September 24 last year.
North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard the 24-year-old became enraged after being asked to move with his cigarette. He then turned violent in full view of children and families.
Prosecutor Jo Fox told the court: “When he was pulled aside, he was clearly not happy to be stopped by the security officer. He became aggressive before he made a racially-aggravated comment saying ‘I will slice your face you black c**t.’”
In a victim impact statement read in court, the bouncer said: “I was very threatened. He approached me with a pint glass in his hand and I thought he would hit me with it. To protect myself and the others around me, I knocked it out of his hand.
“He connected a punch with my left cheek. It felt like the full-on punch of a boxer. He landed haymaker after haymaker. There were lots of people watching. I was afraid he would catch one of the nearby children.”
Whitehouse, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to assault, criminal damage, and racial abuse on October 28.
Jo Corbett, mitigating, said Whitehouse had been struggling with addiction issues which made it difficult for him to control his emotions.
She told the court: “Mr Whitehouse is a gentleman who suffers with addiction. He doesn’t like to use that word, but he has sought out the help of CDAS and been placed on the methadone program. He was also dependent on alcohol, and probation asked him to complete an alcohol course.
“What aggrieved him this day was that he had been having multiple cigarettes outside the venue without complaint. But on this occasion, he was asked to move by the bouncer in a manner he found disrespectful, which caused him to fly off the handle.”
Whitehouse was jailed for 24 weeks. The magistrates told him: “You had plenty of opportunities to stop. But you kept going on and on. You made aggravated racial comments. And you have a poor history of cooperating with probation. Custody is our only option today.”
