PC Saul Gavaghan of West Yorkshire Police was off-duty and ‘in drink’ on a work team night out in Leeds city centre when the incident happened on December 1, 2023. West Yorkshire Police has now published details of a misconduct hearing due to be held on October 29 into the former officer’s behaviour.

The Force listed the allegations and said: “On 1st December 2023, PC Gavaghan was off duty and in drink on a work team’s night out in Leeds City Centre. Whilst at the Be At One Bar, he and other members of his Team became involved in an altercation with unknown members of the public.

“Whilst being escorted off the premises, PC Gavaghan assaulted a member of the security staff by striking him to the face with his elbow.

“On December 2, 2023, PC Gavaghan was charged with an offence of Battery. On May 7, 2024, he was found guilty of those charges at Sheffield Magistrate Court and was ordered to pay a fine and costs.

“In behaving in such a way, PC Gavaghan acted in breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour relating to Discreditable Conduct. This behaviour is alleged to amount to gross misconduct, namely a breach of the Standards of Professional Behaviour that, if proved, is so serious that his dismissal would be justified.”
