Tributes have been paid to a much-loved dad and grandad who worked as a doorman at pubs and clubs in Huddersfield.
Lawrence Howarth, 63, of Holmfirth, has been described as ‘one of a kind’, ‘funny’ and a ‘character’ by his family. He was also a loving dad, stepdad, grandad, brother and a friend.
Lawrence worked as a doorman at numerous pubs and clubs in and around Huddersfield, including the Adega, Sly McFlys, West Riding, The Crown, Changing Lights, Coach House, Pepper House, and The Ribble, Holmfirth.
From the age of around 10, Lawrence lived in a pub, called the Bareknuckle Boys pub at Hinchliffe Mill, Holmfirth, which is now called Stumble Inn.
Lawrence was a keen boxer, having boxed at Slaithwaite boxing club and Holmfirth boxing club when he was in his late teens and through his twenties. He had also worked as a welder but had to give this up following an accident at work.
He died on March 30 at Calderdale Royal Hospital, surrounded by his three children, Vicky, Gemma and James.
A funeral service will take place at Huddersfield Crematorium on Friday, April 25, at 11.15am. Family and friends will then meet at the Stumble Inn, Hinchliffe Mill, to celebrate Lawrence’s life.
In a tribute, his family said: “Lawrence will be sadly missed by all his children, grandchildren, family and friends.
“We hope you can join us after the funeral to celebrate Dads life at the Stumble Inn, Hinchcliffe Mill, formerly known as The Bareknuckle Boys where Dad grew up.”
