Shop assault leaves security guard with serious facial injury in Staplehurst

A security guard was allegedly threatened and attacked by two men who were reportedly trying to steal alcohol.

The victim, who was working at Sainsbury’s in Staplehurst, was left with serious injuries after he was hit in the face with a beer can.

Police officers were called to a disturbance at the superstore in Market Street at around 9pm on June 3, after staff were reportedly threatened and assaulted while trying to prevent the theft of alcohol.

During the attack, a security guard was hit in the face with a beer can and several glass bottles were also thrown in his direction, including one which shattered a glass door.

Responding officers found a car driven by the suspects, which was stopped at 9.30pm, and both were arrested.

On June 5, a 17-year-old boy from Marden appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to robbery, affray, causing actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Davey Brown, 18, of Winch’s Garth, Staplehurst, also faced charges including affray, robbery, criminal damage and assault.

He did not enter any pleas and was remanded into custody until his next hearing which will be at Maidstone Magistrates’ Court on July 4.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson said: “The safety of our colleagues and customers is our highest priority. An incident took place at our Staplehurst store, and we are supporting the police with their investigation.”
