Man spared jail for glassing Doorman in Norwich queue

A drunk man smashed a glass over the head of a Norwich bouncer who had been trying to “quell” disorder in front of him, a court has heard.

Ben Hart, 24, had been on a night out when he was queuing to get into Revolution De Cuba in Queen Street.

Norwich Crown Court heard an altercation broke out in front of Hart involving another man and one of the doormen.

The court heard as that was going on, Hart – who had been holding a pint glass – “smashed” it over the bouncer from behind.

Hart was then “put to the ground” by colleagues of the injured doorman.

He was restrained until police arrived and arrested him following the incident which happened just before midnight on August 12 2023.

The doorman suffered a “laceration” to the crown of his head which was treated by staff at the city’s SOS Bus.

The court heard the victim refused to make a statement following the assault.

Hart, from Surrey, appeared at court this week having admitted unlawful wounding.

Judge Anthony Bate said the doorman had been trying to “quell disorder” when he was attacked by Hart.

Imposing a 10 month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months after the judge took into account his lack of previous offending.

Michael Clare, who represented Hart – who had no previous convictions – said he had written a letter to the judge and handed up a number of references on behalf of the defendant.

Hart was also ordered to do 270 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay the victim £500 compensation.
