A man smashed a wine bottle over a doorman’s head on Brighton seafront, a court was told.
Sulayman Sarr, 36, of Whitehawk Road, Brighton, was charged with wounding Thomas Coker, known as Little T, with intent to cause him grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Sarr appeared before District Judge Adrian Turner at Brighton Magistrates’ Court where the defendant was said to have left Mr Coker with a small but deep wound.
The court was told that the alleged offence happened on Sunday 5 October near Volks bar and club, in Madeira Drive.
Brian Shaw, defending, said that Sarr had claimed to be acting in self-defence.
Sussex Police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a serious altercation in Marine Parade, Brighton.
“On Sunday 5 October, just before 3pm, it was reported that the victim was walking along Marine Parade, near to the gym, when a man with a glass bottle struck him on the head.
“An altercation took place and the victim, a 40-year-old, from Brighton, sustained a serious head injury.
“Sulayman Sarr, 36, of no fixed address, was arrested later that day and charged with causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) and wounding with intent.
“He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 8 October and was remanded in custody. His next hearing is scheduled for Tuesday 11 November.
“It’s believed that further people may have witnessed the incident and could assist with ongoing inquiries.
“If you have information and have not yet spoken to police, we ask you come forward and make a report.

The district judge set a trial date of Wednesday 25 February next year.
