Three Glasgow door staff reported after SIA crackdown on licences

Three bouncers in Glasgow have been reported for alleged licensing offences after a crackdown on door staff across the UK.

Officers from The Security Industry Authority (SIA) visited 224 locations including 15 venues in Glasgow on Saturday, June 21.

The three individuals were found to be allegedly working licensable roles in the city without the appropriate SIA licence, a criminal offence under the Private Security Industry Act 2001 (Section 3).

Pete Easterbrook, executive director of inspections and enforcement at the SIA, said: “Where we identify unlicensed activity, counterfeit licences, suspended licences or breaches of licence conditions, we will act.

“These are not minor technical issues. Licensing is a safeguard that helps protect the public, and where that safeguard is bypassed or ignored, there is a clear public safety risk.”

In total, six suspected Section 3 offences were identified across the country, including one individual believed to be using a counterfeit licence and another working while their licence was suspended.

Other offences uncovered included venue staff managing or carrying out licensable activities without holding an SIA licence, as well as multiple suspected breaches of licence conditions (Section 9 offences).

Mr Easterbrook added: “Supplying unlicensed operatives is a serious matter, and businesses must ensure that the people they supply are legally entitled to work in licensable roles.

“Almost all of the issues identified could have been prevented through stronger management oversight and a clearer understanding of legal responsibilities.

“Effective supervision is not optional, it is fundamental to operating lawfully.

“Over the next week, SIA teams will contact the businesses supplying the unlicensed individuals identified during the inspections to determine their liability. Supplying an unlicensed security operative is a serious criminal offence and the SIA will take action where appropriate.”
