Former shopping centre security guard remembered as ‘a quiet man with a genuinely kind heart’

A County Derry man who worked as a security guard at Meadowlane Shopping Centre in Magherafelt has been remembered as ‘a quiet man with a genuinely kind heart’.

TJ Cudden passed away peacefully at hospital surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, July 5.

The Magherafelt man had worked as a security guard in the town’s shopping centre.

Earlier today, Meadowlane paid a heartfelt tribute to Mr Cudden who they said was ‘a gentle soul who will be remembered with great fondness by everyone here’.

“TJ was a quiet man with a shy smile and a genuinely kind heart. He didn’t seek the spotlight, but his presence was always steady, always dependable.

His gentle nature left a lasting impression on both staff and shoppers alike,” read a post on the centre’s Facebook.

In 2018, the shopping centre was forced to temporarily close following damage caused by flash flooding. TJ was heavily involved in the clean-up operation at that time.

“Many will remember him during one of the most difficult times for the centre; the heavy flooding a number of years ago,” the post continued.

“When chaos reigned and help was needed most, TJ never hesitated. He rolled up his sleeves, got stuck in, and worked tirelessly to help restore order. That was who he was – a grafter, a quiet hero, and a loyal part of our Meadowlane family.”

Adding its condolences to TJ’s family, Meadowlane’s post stated: “We are heartbroken by his loss and extend our deepest condolences to his uncle Terry, who remains a valued and long-standing member of our security team. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and the rest of TJ’s family at this difficult time.

“Rest easy, TJ. You’ll always be part of our story here at Meadowlane.”

According to a death notice, a private funeral service and cremation will follow at a later date.

Mr Cudden was the ‘precious son of recently deceased Karen, and Tom, loving fiancé of Laura and much loved brother of Clarice, Calvin and Sarah’.
