Drunk pummelled Walkabout Doorman after he refused him and his dog entry

A drunk man punched and then headbutted a young doorman after he refused him and his dog re-entry to a busy bar. Thomas Moffatt, 33, left the doorman with significant injuries including a broken nose, loose teeth and cuts.

Moffatt, from St Austell, appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentence having admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Prosecuting the case, Michael Green described how the incident took place in January of last year at Walkabout in Newquay.

Mr Green said the victim was a 20-year-old bouncer working that night who noticed Moffatt leaving with his dog on a lead. Moffatt was staggering and fell into a wall, so the bouncer said goodnight.

At this point Moffatt tried to re-enter but pushed back inside when he was refused. Moffatt proceeded to punch the victim and grab him by the throat. Moffatt was taken down a disabled ramp, but then broke free and landed a forceful headbutt on the bouncer before being arrested.

Representing Moffatt, Jon Holmes said: “Since the offence there has been no more offending. He has got his life in order and everybody speaks highly of his work ethic. He has been very anxious for a long time. Nobody knows why this case has taken so long to get to court.”

Sentencing Moffatt, Recorder John Trevaskis said: “Your behaviour that night was appalling. You were clearly intoxicated and vented your fury on a young security guard who was just doing his job, causing him significant injuries.

“He suffered a broken nose, loosened teeth, a cut lip and pain to his jaw.” Recorder Trevaskis said that given Moffatt’s mitigation, he was able to pass a 12-month sentence, suspended for 24 months. Moffatt must also pay £750 compensation and £300 court costs.
