Colwyn Bay doorman who attacked his ex had his licence suspended

A DOORMAN from Colwyn Bay who has been jailed for strangling and assaulting his then-partner had his security licence suspended after a previous attack on her.

Steven Thirling, 26, was jailed for 17 months at Caernarfon Crown Court on Thursday (February 6), having admitted two attacks on Imogen Bargate on July 26 and 27, 2024.

He had previously been convicted a month earlier, also for assaulting Ms Bargate by beating her, which led to the Security Industry Authority suspending his licence.

A Security Industry Authority spokesperson said: “On July 22, 2024, we suspended Steven Thirling’s door supervision licence, having received information from North Wales Police concerning his conviction.

“He was immediately unable to work legally using his licence.#

“His licence expired on July 24, 2024, meaning no further licensing action was required. As a result, he does not hold a Security Industry Authority licence.”

Thirling and Ms Bargate had been in relationship for a short period when a dispute ensued between them on July 26, 2024.

This resulted in Thirling grabbing her and throwing her to the floor, before sitting on her stomach, strangling her, and threatening to kill her.

The following day, as Ms Bargate was cooking his and her dinner, Thirling hit her across the face several times; she cried and begged him to stop, while he again threatened to kill her.

Thirling then threw his burned dinner in Ms Bargate’s face, before telling her: “Show me some love, and kiss me like you mean it.”

She took refuge in a nearby pub, where a member of staff contacted police.

Judge Rhys Rowlands told Thirling on Thursday he had been responsible for “unpleasant bullying” towards Ms Bargate.

He added: “I’m afraid that, in my judgment, this isn’t a case which simply falls on the cusp of custody.

“You basically ignored the fact you’d just been before the court (in June 2024), and assaulted the victim shortly thereafter.”
