Blackpool bouncer thought he’d been thumped by reveller barred from nightclub – then he felt blood

A reveller who stabbed a doorman when he was refused entry to a Blackpool nightclub has been jailed for 40 months.

Arron Avery, 20, was barred from Trilogy when he tried to gain access on June 11, 2024. His photo had been shared on the door staff’s group chat and when Avery arrived at the club with a friend he was told he was not allowed in.

Avery’s friend walked away and the doorman turned his back on him. He felt a thump to his back and saw Avery walking away to join his pal, Preston Crown Court heard.

However a few second later the doorman felt his back go stiff and felt trickling. He realised he had been stabbed and called for help.

He was taken to hospital and treated for a two inch knife wound between his shoulder blades, which required internal and external stitches.

In a victim impact statement, the doorman said: “As a result of the stabbing I haven’t slept properly. I hardly sleep at all. Since June, I have had difficulties sleeping.”

He said he was unable to work for two to three weeks following the attack but has since made a full recovery from his injuries. “I will always have a scar on my back” he said.

Avery, of Northumberland Avenue, Blackpool, pleaded guilty to GBH and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He appeared at Preston Crown Court to be sentenced over video link from prison.

He told his barrister: “It is disgusting, what I did.” He said he had experienced knife crime when he lived in London and apologised for what he had done.

Sentencing, Recorder Ayesha Siddiqi said: “You don’t need me to tell you this could have been a lot more serious. You went out and you had a knife with you.

“When you became angry that you weren’t allowed into the club, you stabbed someone. You don’t need me to tell you that shouldn’t have been your reaction but it could have been a lot more serious. You could have caused him a lot more harm.

“You could be facing a far greater sentence than the one I am about to impose today. In terms of the injury, thankfully, there were no lasting consequences.”

She said the offence was made worse by the fact Avery was on bail for another violent offence at the time. She also noted he was only 20 when he comitted the offence.

Recorder Siddiqi handed down a sentence of 40 months for the stabbing with 12 months to run concurrently for possession of a bladed article in a public place.
