The doorman at Kirkcaldy pub has been honoured after he helped prevent a young man from taking his own life.
James Peggie acted after seeing the man in visible distress outside Montagues in the High Street. He made sure he was safe and called emergency services.
Now James has received a Pubwatch bravery and meritorious conduct award at the organisation’s Safer Night Time Economy Awards which were held at Brewers’ Hall in London.
James, who was working for Spartan Management, was on duty outside Montagues on New Year’s Eve when he noticed a young person in visible distress. After speaking with the teenager, he realised he was intending to take his own life. James moved to safeguard the individual, ensuring he could not wander off alone, and contacted emergency services.
After finishing his duties for the night, he transported the teenager to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy, ensuring he was safely handed into the care of medical staff.
On receiving the award James said: “I am very honoured. Working for Spartan Management, in Montagues Bar, we have a whole team of people who work hard to try and do the right thing as often as possible. To help our customers, or anyone who may need us.
“This award is for the whole team, and for all doormen who go that extra mile to help vulnerable people, every weekend but never get any thanks for it.”
Steve Baker, chair of National Pubwatch, said it was “a real privilege” to honour James.
“He showed tremendous empathy and professionalism, helping to reduce harm to someone who was in real need,” he said.
