A “kind” and “valued” security guard at a supermarket in Kidderminster has been recognised for helping a young mum and her children get home safely.
John Tyler, who works as a security colleague at Asda, has been described as a “total gentleman” after booking and paying for a taxi so a family wouldn’t have to walk two miles home in torrential rain.
Mr Tyler said: “The woman had done her shopping and had two children – one of them looked about 12-months-old and was in a sling on her chest. It started to rain like hell and it was cold too.
“The were stood there and I asked her if she was waiting for a taxi and she said she was just waiting for the rain to stop. I don’t think she had an umbrella either. I said to her to come inside and told her if it hadn’t stopped raining in 15 minutes, I would get her a taxi.”
“The kids looked very tired and cold, so I phoned for one straight away and just paid it for her. I felt sorry for her. I’m a big soft bear really. I did it as I’ve been there and had to walk miles in the rain. With what’s happening in the world right now, it’s nice for people to do good things.”
On social media, the mum had posted about how “wonderful” John had been in helping her and her family.
She said: “A post of appreciation for John the security guy at Asda for being an absolutely wonderful human.
“I was stressing about myself and two young children walking back in this horrible weather, so much so that he booked and paid for a taxi to make sure we were safe and dry.”
Lots of people commented on the post to sing Mr Tyler’s praises and said he is a “pleasure to work alongside” and “always has a smile on his face”.
Mr Tyler, aged 66, is a grandad of nine and only started working at the store shortly before Christmas after being a printer all his life.
His son, Steven, is a manager at the store.
Store manager Hannah Donoher said: “I’m incredibly proud of John for his act of kindness in paying for a customer to get her and her children home safe.
“This is just one example of how John goes above and beyond for all customers and colleagues. He’s a valued member of the team and a great example of Asda’s values.”
Mr Tyler has been rewarded through Asda’s internal recognition scheme to cover the cost of the taxi fare plus a little extra to thank him for his kindness.
