Man made gun gesture to security guard in Oak Mall Greenock

A MAN admitted making a gun gesture at a security guard in Greenock’s Oak Mall after being told not to walk over a spillage.

Curtis Goncalves, 20, shouted and swore after he was told to avoid moving in the direction of where a cleaner was dealing with the mess.

When he was escorted outside the centre, Goncalves told the security guard ‘If I had a gun you would get that’ while gesturing towards him and simulating a handgun with his right hand.

The procurator fiscal told the court: “The security guard was assisting the cleaner with a spillage.

“The accused approached the witness and requested that he refrain from walking in that direction.

“Goncalves informed the security guard that he could walk wherever he wanted to and began swearing.

“Due to his behaviour he was asked to exit and was escorted to the main doorway.

“Once he was outside, he began to verbally abuse the witness.”

Goncalves, of the town’s Aberfoyle Road, pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening or abusive manner, acting in an aggressive manner towards a male security guard, shouting, and threatening him with violence, all while on bail.

The incident took place just before 4.30pm on December 18, 2024.

Goncalves’ defence solicitor Ellen Macdonald said there was ‘no excuse’ for her client’s behaviour but said he was under the influence at the time.

Sheriff James Varney deferred sentence for 12 weeks to allow for the preparation of a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment.

He told Goncalves: “How I deal with this will depend on if I see you coming through custody.

“You need to sort your accommodation out in an area outside Inverclyde.”

Goncalves’ previous bail order was continued. The case will call again on March 11.
