Judge jails Davey Brown, 19, for three years and one month after incident at Sainsbury’s store in Kent
A shoplifter who attempted to steal beer by pretending to be a wheelchair user has been jailed.
Footage showed Davey Brown, 19, hiding a large crate under a jacket on his lap as another man wheeled him out of a Sainsbury’s store in Maidstone, Kent.
As the pair reached the exit, a security guard grabbed the wheelchair and Brown leapt up and assaulted him.
Brown was then seen throwing the crate at the guard before hurling individual bottles and cans at employees, injuring one, and fleeing the scene.
He was intercepted by police about 30 minutes later, when he launched into an expletive-laden tirade captured in bodycam footage.
Brown gesticulated and told officers: “I couldn’t give a f— what you got. Gun, taser, you name it. I couldn’t give a f— what you’ve got.
“I will break you in an instant, I’d love you to take that uniform off and stand over here with me and I’d break every bone in your face.”
Kent Police later established that Brown had crashed into a parked car while driving to the Sainsbury’s.
Brown, of Staplehurst, was charged with affray, common assault, robbery, two counts of damaging property, using threatening words and behaviour and driving a motor vehicle on a road without insurance.
He pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court, and on Thursday was sentenced to three years and one month in prison.
A 17-year-old boy was also arrested and charged in connection with the incident. He was given a six-month sentence, to be served in a young offenders’ institute.
Pc Ricky Strong, the investigating officer, said: “Brown is a violent man who endangered another motorist, attacked a security guard and their colleague, and made threats to attending police officers.
“He left a man with injuries requiring hospital treatment for simply carrying out his job.
“A custodial sentence means Brown will be unable to put any other members of the public at risk for some time.”
