A much-loved North Tyneside doorman has died from cancer aged 69. Sydney ‘Syd’ Ahomet was a well-known face in North Tyneside having worked doors in North Shields, Whitley Bay and Tynemouth.
He was also known for his love of martial arts and going to the gym. Tragically, Syd passed away earlier this month after being diagnosed with bowel cancer three years ago.
Now, his wife, Lisa Ahomet, has paid tribute to her husband. She said: “He was a doorman everyone knew as being a gentleman. He was never a bully, and was always very well respected.
“He was just the best, he was a tough guy on the outside but very soft on the inside. He was very well respected by everyone he knew. He was the most loving guy, he lived for me and his family.”
Outside of working as a doorman, Syd also taught martial arts. Lisa said: “He was just an inspiration to a lot of people through his training.
“He used to teach martial arts and mixed martial arts. A lot of the guys he taught went on to be champions.
“The gym was his church and everybody knew him and everybody had nice things to say, not one person had a bad word to say. He trained in the gym every day and fought and stayed so dignified.
“He fought his last fight with this cancer really but he was so dignified throughout the whole thing.”
Syd, who has two sons Mark and Ryan, sadly died on August 2 after his brave battle with cancer. His funeral will be held at Tynemouth Crematorium on Tuesday, August 26 at 3pm.
Lisa added: “He was a true fighter and all the cards I have, everyone is saying what a warrior, what a gentleman, a true North Shields legend. He has been such an inspiration.
“It is just really the past six weeks that things have gone a little bit wrong and the cancer ravaged him. I think it will be a huge funeral. He was such a huge part of North Shields.”
