A SALESMAN has been handed a suspended jail term after threatening to stab pub staff, armed with a screwdriver and a knife hidden in his underwear.
Jack Cowan admitted possessing a bladed article and using threatening behaviour at The Crown Hotel pub in Ryde High Street, on July 13 last year.
The 32-year-old appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court for sentencing on Tuesday (March 25).
The court heard how Cowan, of Bagwich Lane, Godshill, was ordered to leave the pub after being rude to staff.
However, he refused and was walked off the premises by a security officer.
Lauren McConnell, prosecuting, told the bench Cowan was abusive and threatened the security officer, saying: “I’m going to have you. I’m going to do you. I’m going to stab you.”
Shortly after, Cowan was spotted outside holding a screwdriver, and was taken to the ground by the security officer, who then called the police.
Officers searched Cowan and found a kitchen knife concealed in his boxer shorts.
Tom Cooke, defending, said Cowan has shown remorse for his actions, describing them as “out of character”.
Mr Cooke said: “Being intoxicated was the key, deciding factor. He has no recollection of the incident, or his behaviour.”
Cowan has since stopped drinking alcohol and is attending Alcoholics Anonymous.
He was handed a 16-week jail term, suspended for a year, and ordered to complete 20 rehabilitation sessions.
Cowan was also told to pay £300 compensation to the security officer.
