Bar security may have to get certified - USA

Bouncers and other security personnel at Lafayette Parish bars may have to take training classes and become certified before they are allowed to work at those establishments.

The proposal would require the Lafayette police chief to sign off on those certifications. Individuals would have to pay a $75 fee to Lafayette Consolidated Government to cover training costs, and the certificate would be valid for two years.

LCG is expecting to issue about 120 certificates, according to a budget memo. That would result in about $9,000 going into the city general fund.

The Lafayette City-Parish Council will vote on the proposal Tuesday. If approved, it will be up for a final vote Nov. 2.

All applicants for certification would have to be at least 18 and "a person of good moral character and reputation," according to the ordinance. Applicants cannot have any felony, drug or weapons convictions within three years of applying, and must not have had a similar certificate revoked within one year of filing their application in Lafayette.

The certificates could be revoked if the bouncer works as security personnel "in an intoxicated or impaired state," commits battery or a felony, possesses any illegal drug or possesses any illegally concealed weapon.

Anyone found to have worked as a bouncer without a valid certificate could face a fine of up to $300 and/or 15 days in jail. In addition, a business could have its alcoholic beverage permit suspended or revoked if it is found to have employed non-certified security personnel.

In an unrelated matter, the council also will vote on whether to override City-Parish President Joey Durel's veto of a proposal to include a drainage project in the city-parish budget. It takes six council votes to override a veto.
