Notts bars asked to adopt smart dress code

Nottingham licensees have given tentative support to police calls for clubs to adopt smart dress codes to curb violence.

Paul Inman, police licensing officer for Newark and Sherwood, has been asking licensees to implement dress codes, believing that people would be less likely to fight if they were dressed smartly.

It follows a “significant increase” in incidents at the Corn Exchange nightclub on Castlegate, Newark.

“It is my opinion, but if somebody goes out in an old jumper and £4 jeans from Tesco, they are not going to be bothered about rolling around on the ground at the end of the night,” Inman told the Newark Advertiser.

“If they are wearing decent shoes, smart trousers or even decent jeans, they will be that bit more reluctant.

“I have explained the value of this to the licensees but it will be their decision.”

Tantra club on Victoria Street operates a strict smart dress policy seven nights a week. Manager Mike Dawson said: “I suppose it might help a little bit.

“Some nightclubs run student nights and they let people in wearing all sorts. If you’re wearing sports gear you need to go to the gym. But I would expect people to dress casually to go to the pub on Sundays, for example.”

Gatecrasher on Queen Street also enforces a strict dress policy including no trainers, hoodies or baseball caps. Manager Louise Sharp said the scheme might be worth pursuing in troublesome venues, but it wouldn’t affect Gatecrasher.

Another club manager, who wished to remain anonymous, said: “I don’t think it would make a difference. The only thing is it would be helpful to exclude a certain type of person. I would get involved, but I think they can come up with something better than that.”

The Corn Exchange was unavailable for comment.

i worked one bar in nottingham and the manager was a ******, he told us one night that no trainers tonight unless its students.
i told him to stand on there door and turn people away for wearing trainers and take the abuse because they can see people inside wearing trainers.

Got to disagree Stuart. Dress codes do play there part, particularly in areas where a standard of dress has been adopted by a group or groups of people. Look at the way that Burberry, Stone Island and the like were taken on by the hooligan crews. The Rockport boots sported by a good many of the chavs nationwide. The stripy jumpers that were part of Townie culture not too many years ago. The check shirts and mullets favoured by a lot of the gyppo's in this area. I know it screams stereotyping but sometimes it's better safe than sorry. I see no harm in a dress code, if people can't respect themselves, they're not likely to respect you and your venue. It's been used to keep a lot of s*it out of venues that I've worked and I'm all for it. Can be a problem if you're venue is too popular as the scrotes will change clothes to try and fit in,so you still need to recognise them.

Glad it's not just me. Same story with sportswear and the big chunky jewellery. Darlington has an issue with massive saddle rings, soveriegns and those make shift knuckledusters. You see some of the biggest chunks of metal, with half a roll of electricians tape wrapped around it to make it fit. Looks ridiculous. Got sick of telling people to take them off so just started throwing out anybody who was found wearing one. Soon got rid of them.

At the end of the day, going to a nightclub used to be an occasion, and as such, people dressed appropriately. Doesn't happen now. Same as the little shits you see outside the Magistrates court in their tracksuits and Superdry jackets. I was always brought up to believe that certain occasions warranted a shirt and tie. Court would have been one of them. It's not that difficult to make an effort.

Agreed... It will help. It will not stamp out problems all together.. As mentioned elsewhere, some times people just flip and it doesn't matter what they are wearing...

But yeah, on the whole, a dress code is an effecitive way of limiting 'violent incidents' in venues..

And whats wrong with dressing up a bit to go out anyway??? When I was a lad drone, drone, drone, grumble, youth today, moan, gripe.

I use to be amazed at the people that came into a venue I use to work. They use to take great pride in telling me how they have a "Saturday night tracksuit" that was nicer than all their other ones and they'd put on especially for going out!!!

Strict dress code can put off unwanted people but NOT if every venue does it, because then those people will have no place to go, get pissed off, and start kicking off on door, OR they will just start dressing slightly better, to get in, but will STILL be assholes.

Fact is, everywhere NEEDS a sh*thole club or pub, otherwise they invade the nicer peoples places.

When I first started doing this, the head doorman told me always check the shoes, decent shoes usually decent people. So clean and polished always got a good welcome, and I really miss the no trainers rule, if your going out, make an effort otherwise bugger off back to the bus shelter and get stuck into your white lightning!
